Discover how FOMO evolved from a simple idea into a fast-paced 'toxic' card game designed to test your friendships.
The idea for FOMO came to me in August 2025. At that point, I had wanted to create a physical product for a few years already. I was tired of working in tech, so I wanted to build a product that had nothing to do with screens, at least not directly. Somehow, I got the idea of a card game.
I had been living in Poland for three years by then and fell in love with board and card games, something I had not explored enough in the past. While I loved playing UNO with friends, I also remember playing “Kemps” as a kid. The goal of the game is to collect four cards, like Queens or Fives.
That was the main inspiration behind FOMO. I knew there was potential in the concept, but I wanted to make it more unpredictable, crazy, and wild for modern party card game for groups.
By introducing action cards and keeping half of the cards face-down, I added new layers of memory and strategy to the game. Once I integrated those elements and playtested the game enough times, everything just clicked.
Initially, the rules and game dynamics were completely different than what they are now. I played FOMO constantly while gathering feedback and refining the mechanics. My goal was to create one of the best easy-to-learn strategy games on the market.
My friends and I iterated on everything from the card count to the functionality of the action cards until we reached a version where nobody had any suggestions left to make. We just enjoyed playing. The game was finally balanced and fun.
This was the core of my indie card game creation process. That is when I knew the prototyping phase was complete. All that was left was to finalize the card and box designs, find a manufacturer, and prepare a production run so I could get the game into real people’s hands and test it on a larger scale.
There is nothing more satisfying than introducing this game to someone who has no idea I created it. Because they don’t know me, they can be objective. There is no need for them to be kind or spare my feelings.
For me, the best compliment is not someone saying, “I love this game.” It is hearing them say, “Let’s play another one,” and then, “Let’s play again.” That is when I know I have built something that truly resonates.
I have sent copies to many of my friends and even to my therapist, who played it with his wife and kids. He told me they had a blast, shared plenty of laughs, and were completely hooked on the game’s unique social and card games dynamics.
FOMO is one of the most fun “toxic” party card games for game night, and it has quickly become the favorite game to play amongst my friends and family. If you are looking for the best new card games 2026, FOMO offers a fresh and exciting experience for your table.
The name fits the spirit of the game perfectly, but that is not the only reason I chose it. I wanted a brand name that was familiar, short, and easy to remember. I also specifically wanted a four-letter word to match the core mechanic of the game, where the goal is to collect four identical cards to win. “FOMO” checked every box, and it aligns perfectly with the high-energy nature of the action cards.
I wanted to incorporate popular slang that Gen Z and Millennials use in their day-to-day lives. Using terms like “Canceled,” “Ghosted,” “Plot Twist,” and “Throwback” makes the game feel instantly relatable.
These titles alone describe exactly what each card does, which makes the game easier to learn and more effective to market. When a player hears that a “Ghosted” card forces the next person to skip a turn, it clicks immediately. FOMO is a modern party game that uses the language of today to create a chaotic and fun experience for everyone at the table.
FOMO is designed to turn a quiet living room into a hub of chaotic energy in under five minutes. If you are tired of playing the same old party card games, FOMO changes that.
In other games, you wait for your turn. In FOMO, you’re constantly reading, reacting, and plotting. It brings life to your game night by demanding your full attention, focus, and just the right amount of betrayal.
If you are hosting a casual Friday night, this is the fast-paced card game your shelf has been waiting for. It is easy to pick up, impossible to predict, and guaranteed to spark the best kind of banter at your table.
Like one of my friends said, “I’ve never flipped a table in my life, but FOMO made me want to.” I think this describes the game quite nicely. If you want to keep up with the story of FOMO, follow us on social media and thank you for the support.
